Fall 2021 Solidarity Statement of UMGSA General Council in Support of UMFA Strike
The University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association (UMGSA) stands in solidarity with the striking professors, researchers, librarians, councillors and other members of the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) in their fight for fair compensation, academic autonomy and equitable labour conditions. UMGSA acknowledges that the provincial government’s mandate interfered with the collective bargaining process. Further, this resulted in repeated failures of the University of Manitoba administration to meet the needs of UMFA members since 2016.
We understand the academic disruption this strike causes for graduate students, yet recognize its necessity in ensuring strong recruitment and retention of academic staff that will, in turn, bring lasting benefits for students. A fair deal for UMFA means improved learning and research opportunities for graduate students. The future of academic excellence at the University of Manitoba relies on supporting our Faculty in meeting their demands.
UMGSA will continue to support students through the difficulty and stress brought on by this academic disruption. We call on the administration to respectfully address the grievances of UMFA members and to promptly reach a fair collective agreement with UMFA.
UMGSA wants you to know that we are here for you. You may reach out to any Executive member listed here UMGSA Executive Team | UMGSA. We encourage all the graduate students to keep the communication channel open with their supervisor and / or their department head and / or graduate advisor.
