The UMGSA has worked on a lot of important projects since May 1, 2020. Here are some of the things the UMGSA has done:

  • Surveyed students and advocated against the continuing fee increase.
  • Advocated for an extension of fee payment deadlines during COVID-19 for graduate students.
  • Successfully transitioned the UMGSA investments into ethical investments.
  • When the U of M did not agree to remove the continuing fee increase, we advocated for increased scholarship funding and student assistance.
  • Surveyed students on the effects of COVID-19 in order to advocate for increased student support during the pandemic.
  • Successfully advocated for a bus pass subsidy during COVID-19 in lieu of U-Pass.
  • Joined the Manitoba Association of Post-Secondary Students (MAPSS) in order to increase to UMGSA’s advocacy at the provincial level.
  • Prepared statements and plans in the event of a strike by UMFA during COVID-19.
  • Provided over 400 students with holiday hampers during COVID-19 by re-allocating conference grant funds.
  • Successfully advocated for increased scholarships and bursaries for graduate students during COVID-19.
  • Established the External Relations Fund Ad Hoc Committee to manage a large pool of UMGSA money that was recently released to us.
  • Partnered with FGS to provide subsidies to international students for English language classes through the ELC.
